What is the APB?
Associação Portuguesa de Bancos (Portuguese Bank Association - APB) is the main body representing the banking sector in Portugal. The APB is a private, non-profit business association.
Its purpose is to represent its members in relations with the authorities responsible for regulating banking activities and for drafting economic policy in order to help improve the regulatory system and the quality of banking services and to reduce risk levels. It also seeks to provide education and information on banking to the general public and encourage measures that lead to a better relationship between the banks and their customers and broader access for the public to financial products and services.

It was founded on 10 August 1984 by Decree-Law 215-C/75 of 30 April. The deeds setting up the APB were published in Diário da República III Série on 12 April 1985

What is the IFB?
Instituto de Formação Bancária (Portuguse Bank Training Institute - IFB) belongs to the APB. It is responsible for training in the banking sector. Its mission is to reinforce banking culture and foster the development of the Portuguese financial sector by improving the qualifications of its human resources.
Who can take the IFB's courses?
Employees of the APB's member banks, though it is open to individuals and entities from other sectors
What types of training does it offer?
- Training of candidates: people aged under 25 who have completed the 9th but not the 12th grade and are candidates for banking jobs
- Basic training: New recruits and employees with some experience, managers, commercial staff and account managers
- Intermediate training: Directors, supervisors and managers
- Higher Education (Instituto Superior de Gestão Bancária - School of Bank Management): Professionals in the financial and other sectors, young people completing upper secondary school and wishing to obtain academic qualifications in banking and highly qualified people (directors and senior managers) wishing to further their knowledge in highly specialised areas in conferences and Executive Courses
